Despite the summer temperatures, many children are apparently already thinking of Santa Claus. More than 2,000 letters have already arrived at the Nikolaus post office in St. Nikolaus, Saarland. This is reported by the chairman of the St. Nicholas Festival Committee, Peter Gerecke, of the German Press Agency.
children worry
According to him, quite a few children wrote in the letters that they were worried because many things had become more expensive. “They worry about whether they will get less or whether their wishes cannot be fulfilled,” said Gerecke. Some wrote that they were worried they might not be able to go on some trips because admissions to amusement parks or swimming pools went up.
“Many letters that come are more distressing letters and not the classic letters with wish lists.” One has the impression that children “write a lot from the soul”. Others wrote to Santa Claus to greet him – and to wish him a nice summer, Gerecke said. Among the letters received were latecomers from last Christmas.
Answer letters only in December
All letters will be answered. However, the children who have now written will have to wait quite a while for the reply letter. The replies do not reach the children until St. Nicholas Day.
At Christmas 2021, the 44 volunteers responded to 30,711 letters from children from a total of 43 countries – more than ever before. For more than 50 years, children have been writing “To St. Nicholas” in the small town in the municipality of Großrosseln near the French border.
According to Deutsche Post, it is the oldest St. Nicholas post office in Germany. The partnership between the festival committee and Swiss Post has existed since 1967.
