The concept focuses on activities that focus on artistic and craft activities, exercise and games, and also simply free play. Beatrice Kaltenbach-Holzmann, chairwoman of the board of the Kaltenbach Foundation, looks at the children playing in the spacious garden around the table at the press conference and who don’t seem to notice the adults at all: she knows many “former” students who still emphasize the importance of their time on the holiday program for their personal development. “The time off from school is just as important as school time: you learn even more for life during that time,” she says. Daniel Frey confirms this. The head of the foundation’s day-care center is also involved in the holiday program, where the children harvest and make apples themselves under supervision.

The SAK started its holiday care in Lörrach 50 years ago with the play bus in neighborhoods. For 25 years, the SAK has been offering multifaceted holiday programs with the aim of creating cross-environmental meeting spaces.
The primary school expansion
The legal right to all-day care for primary school children also means that structural changes are necessary in primary schools.
