Virologist Steven Van Gucht warns that children can also be a source of corona infection. While many experts agree that children themselves are less likely to get sick, and when they do, they show less severe symptoms, they are just as contagious as an adult. “Children are certainly a source of infection,” says Steven Van Gucht of Sciensano. He therefore warns that especially grandparents should be aware of this. That reports HLN.
Van Gucht does not immediately see a threat to young parents. A corona infection is more dangerous for grandparents: “I can imagine that a fit man in his seventies who is in the prime of his second life decides to be more careful with his grandchildren for a few months now. Wearing a mouth mask – but then a good surgical mouth mask that also protects yourself – is certainly not a bad idea. Having children wear a mouth mask is not a good idea, they put it on the wrong way anyway. ”
On the other hand, the virologist also understands that people who are in the last months of their lives want to experience them with their grandchildren as intensely as possible and consciously take a risk.
Van Gucht does not believe that we should isolate children by banning school or youth movements. “These intense contacts are even more important for the well-being of the children than for adults. That’s something we don’t like and don’t want to take away from them ”, he concludes.
