Eleven people, including nine children, died at a high school in the capital of the Russian republic of Tatarstan – Kazan, in a shooting discovered by two people today, TASS reported, citing a source in law enforcement.
Tatarstan President Rustam Minikhanov has confirmed the deaths of seven eighth-graders – four boys and three girls, as well as a teacher, Russia-1 TV reported.
Twelve children and four adults were taken to hospital.
One attacker, 19, was detained. He graduated from the same school 4 years ago and had an officially registered weapon.
The second shooter was killed by security forces in the high school building.
One of the attackers entered through the main entrance with an automatic weapon and immediately opened fire, a source from the Ministry of Education told TASS. A staff member was injured at the entrance.
The teacher who died in the shooting had a class with fifth-graders.
The children were evacuated, some students jumped out of the windows to escape the shooting.
A schoolgirl said she was in class when she first heard an explosion and then a shooting. Her entire class was taken out through the back entrance and none of her classmates were injured.
