The Growing Up Agency points out that the group of children with a care allowance was 11.5 percent larger in December than a year earlier, ie 4,515 children. The increase is due to giving priority to children who make a first application, which means that many new benefits have been added. Furthermore, the simplified procedures and increased staff deployment give the number a boost. However, because the health care allowances can also be allocated retroactively, these figures are not yet fixed.
A quarter of the children with a Growth Package (24.2 percent) are also entitled to a monthly social allowance. This amount provides extra support to families with a limited income. That group has increased by 1.6 percent compared to 2021. Especially in the cities of Antwerp (45.9 percent), Ronse (42.9 percent) and Ostend (40.6 percent), a large proportion of children with a Growth Package receive an additional social allowance.
The number of children with a school allowance is shrinking slightly. Slightly more than 486,000 children meet the financial, pedagogical and nationality requirements, which is 0.9 percent less than one year previously. On average, this amounts to 758 euros per year for pupils in secondary education and 161 euros for pupils in primary education. In HBO5, that amount is a lot higher (1,681 euros) and slightly lower for toddlers (107 euros).
