Child Tests Positive for Polio Virus in Central Java: Vaccination Campaign Launched in Sleman

TYPE, YOGYAKARTA – Recently a case of a child was confirmed positive for the polio virus in Manisrenggo District, Klaten Regency, Central Java Province. This area borders directly on the Sleman area.

According to the Head of the Sleman District Health Service, Cahya Purnama, Saturday (20/1/2024) following up on this, the Indonesian Ministry of Health instructed to ensure that all children aged 0 to 7 years in all areas of Central Java and East Java provinces as well as Sleman Regency, DI Yogyakarta received 2 additional doses of polio immunization drops at the Sub National Immunization Week (Sub PIN) activities which will be held starting January 15 2024.

It mentions polio or poliomyelitis is a highly contagious disease caused by the Polio virus. This disease attacks the nervous system which can cause paralysis and there is no cure. But this can be prevented with polio immunization.

Regarding this, the Sleman Regency Government is taking preventive steps. Namely by holding a Sub-National Immunization Week (Sub-PIN) through the Health Service.

“For this reason, we invite all families who have children aged 0 to 7 years to take part in the Polio Sub-PIN (National Immunization Sub-Week) at the nearest Posyandu, Kindergarten, Elementary School and sub-district,” he explained.

Cahya Purnama said that the implementation of the Polio Sub-PIN was carried out in 2 stages. The first phase starts from 15 to 20 January 2024. Meanwhile, phase 2 starts from 19 February to 24 February 2024.

Cahya explained that polio was designated by the Indonesian Ministry of Health as an extraordinary event (KLB) in early 2024 after there were polio cases in several areas in Central Java. As a district that directly borders Central Java, Sleman Regency needs to take action, one of which is implementing the Polio Sub-Pin.

He explained that Polio drops were given twice with a minimum distance of 1 month and could be obtained free of charge at Community Health Centers, Posyandu, Kindergartens, Elementary Schools, MI and other Immunization Posts.

Meanwhile, the vaccine given is NOPV type 2 which is expected to be able to break the chain of polio transmission so that it does not spread in Sleman. Cahya stated that the target for implementing the Polio Sub-Pin in Sleman was 95 percent.

At the end of his statement he also advised the people of Sleman to always adopt clean and healthy living habits, including defecating in latrines with septic tanks and washing hands with soap before eating and after defecating.

Separately, the Regent of Sleman, Kustini Sri Purnomo last Friday (19/1/2024) directly observed the implementation of the Polio Sub-PIN in Donoharjo Village, Ngaglik, Sleman.

On this occasion, Kustini explained that the implementation of polio drops was a preventive step in preventing the spread of polio into Sleman Regency.
Because the spread of polio has entered several areas in Central Java. According to Kustini, Sleman Regency must take early preventive steps. One of them is through polio drops.

Regarding this, Kustini invites all Sleman residents who have children aged 0 to 7 years to be given polio immunization at the nearest service post so that our children stay healthy and are protected from polio in particular.
