Child still in critical condition after explosion of pleasure yacht at Groningen campsite Inland

The condition of one of the children is still critical, police said on Thursday. Forensic investigations are taking place on the ship and those involved and eyewitnesses are being heard.

The explosion took place on Wednesday around 1.45 pm at a campsite on the Strandweg along the Zuidlaardermeer. Bystanders provided first aid until ambulances, a diving team, fire brigade and police arrived. The victims would (partly) come from a family. The police won’t say anything about it.

According to regional broadcaster RTV Noord, people had just bought the boat and the explosion took place just as they were about to sail away. Victim support is available for those who saw the blast.

Exploded gas bottle?

Witnesses believe something went wrong with a gas cylinder. There was widespread panic after the explosion.

According to two people from North Brabant who witnessed it, it ‘looked terrible’.
