Child Sets School on Fire in Jakarta Due to Bullying: KPAI Calls for Police and Correctional Center to Handle the Case Responsibly

Jakarta

SO (14), a student at Temanggung, Central Java (Central Java) allegedly set his school on fire because he claimed to be bullied by his friends and teachers. KPAI regretted that SO, whose status is a child in conflict with the law (ABH), was shown to the public when the police held a press conference on this case.

“Yes, we have been coordinating for 2 days, because there are a few things that are somewhat hampered. I am surprised, frankly, I criticize ABH’s participation in the police case, yes, I think this should be a concern so that the police pay more attention to the SPPA law. (Children Criminal Justice System, red) to be implemented,” said KPAI Chair Ai Maryati to journalists, Sunday (2/7/2023).

“Of course we provide the widest possible space in the realm of investigation and information from the Correctional Center to find out about the bullying experienced by Ananda,” he added.

It is known that at a press conference in this case SO was presented by the police and wearing a head covering. According to Ai, the presence of the child as the suspected perpetrator will have an impact on the child’s psychology.

“We regret that, we are shocked, why is this the police, there is no story covering the face, this child is experiencing psychological shock, because anyone, even if their face is covered. Just initials, I think that has also made someone psychologically threatened, this is what we I regretted it at the start. I hope the police must improve their professionalism,” he said.

Ai said the KPAI was coordinating with the local Correctional Center regarding this case. Ai stressed that the child’s hope with this law is still 14 years old.

“This kid has to go beyond the restoration meeting first justice, because if you look at the standards it is clear that there is an age under legal responsibility, this is 14 years. That’s why we are in full coordination with the Correctional Center and the police. But there are areas that we think at the initial level we have to correct, that it is not permissible to present a child at the age of 14 for the sake of a title, even if it is closed and so on,” he said.

Ai suspects that the student experienced a very sad situation as a result bullying This led to the burning of the school. Ai hopes that in this case various parties are involved so that the case is balanced.

“Because of this, there are degrees, there is escalation. Maybe it’s not to that extent that he took the actions he suspected temporarily, if he also didn’t experience a very sad situation, which really made him suffer. Of course we provide such broad opportunities and involve Balai Penitentiary so that information is balanced through investigations, investigations and then through community research (Litpas) in this case the authority of BK Bapas,” he said.

Encourage Child Recovery

In addition, Ai pushed for the rights of the child who was the suspected perpetrator to be restored. Ai hopes that there will be a role from parents to teachers in this matter.

“Of course, parents and teachers, schools, I think they should provide support for recovery, accelerate the selection of this child. This must have shocked him too, maybe he was personally shocked, it turns out that the impact of the suspicion that he carried out burning was not a joke, something which also harms the school and other children, then also the subsequent bullying from a social perspective, not only in the school environment against him,” said Ai.
