Zhan Xinyang also said that sitting around and doing nothing is the key to lifelong happiness.

Zhang is known to have entered university at the age of 10, and entered graduate school at the age of 13. In 2011, these 16-year-old boys succeeded in becoming PhD students in applied mathematics at Beihang University, one of the leading institutions in Beijing.

In the same year, he began to stir controversy when he asked his parents to buy an apartment in Beijing worth two million yuan or the equivalent of IDR 4.3 billion.

If they didn’t, Zhang threatened to give up his master’s degree and turned down the PhD offer.

“You expect me to stay in Beijing more than anyone, so you have to work hard for this,” Zhang told his parents, quoted from the page South China Morning Post, Saturday (7/10/2023).

Zhang’s demands at the time stemmed from the belief that owning an apartment, getting a good job, and being registered as a city resident were the hallmarks of success.

In order to calm their son, Zhang’s parents were willing to rent an apartment in Beijing and lied to their son that they had bought the apartment.

Although Zhang finally completed his doctorate in 2019, and became a lecturer at a university. However, Zhang finally resigned from his job two years later.

Now, he lives in a rented apartment in Shanghai and only has a few thousand yuan in his bank account to survive. Remembering that his parents had lied about buying the apartment, Zhang said they were in debt.
