A report prepared by various international organizations stated that even today, in front of the progress in the field of science and technology, one child dies every six seconds in the world. According to a report released on Thursday, March 14, by various organizations such as the Child Welfare Fund, the World Health Organization, the World Bank, and the United Nations, which collect information on child mortality, in 2022, nearly fifty lakh children have died before reaching the age of five. But the report, titled “Statistics and Trends in Infant Mortality,” noted a nearly 51 percent drop in child mortality in 2022 compared to 2002.

Almost half of all child deaths in 2022 will be newborns. The organization’s report stated that around twenty one lakh people between the ages of five and twenty four died at the same time. The report also noted that the risk of death for children from poor families is twice that of other children. But children living in vulnerable and conflict zones are nearly three times more likely to die than others. According to the report, by the end of 2030, about three and a half million children in the world will die before the age of five.

Many economically backward countries have made efforts to reduce child mortality, the report said, highlighting the examples of countries such as Cambodia, Malawi, Mongolia and Rwanda. UNICEF Director General Catherine Russell stated that such progress was made possible with the help of better health systems.

The report specifically highlighted that while humanity has progressed in many areas, we are yet to completely eliminate child mortality. Africa and South Asia have the highest infant mortality rates. The report stated that between 2000 and 2022, nearly twenty-two million infants and young people died.
