A seven-year-old boy who suffered a serious cut on his neck due to the use of thread was discharged and is at home, recovering under outpatient care. The accident occurred on Sunday night, while the child was riding a bicycle in Villa Bosques de Santa Clara in Rancagua.
According to investigations by the Rancagua Homicide Squad, the incident occurred when a kite, with a cured thread hanging from it, became entangled around the child’s neck.
Initially, the minor was rushed to SAR 1, where due to the severity of the wound to his neck, he was referred to the Franco Ravera Regional Hospital.
Although the boy was hospitalized in serious condition, it was reported that his condition was not life-threatening. After receiving the necessary stitches and medical attention, he was discharged to continue his recovery at home.
Alice Catalán, director of the Dr. Franco Ravera Zunino Regional Hospital, explained that “on Sunday, a minor was admitted to our emergency unit after having suffered an accident due to handling cured thread, which caused a cut to his neck and also to his ear. Fortunately, the incident did not go any further, the patient received the appropriate sutures and is now at home receiving the necessary outpatient care required.”
The director added that “we are starting the month of September and we have this accident. We want to educate the population about the proper use and handling of all these kite and thread elements, which are so commonly used during national holidays. Cured thread should not be used. It is highly dangerous; and, therefore, all people who are going to use kites should buy these implements in places that are authorized, especially the thread, because it can cause tremendous damage to the population,” she said.
The Investigative Police are continuing to investigate in order to find the person responsible for using the cured thread, which is presumed to have come from a vacant lot near the Baquedano sector, where it is common to fly kites at this time of year.
Authorities reiterate their call not to use cured thread, emphasizing the risks that this material represents both for those who handle it and for third parties, reminding that the manufacture, storage and sale of cured thread are prohibited and face high penalties.
