Child Hospitalized After Impact of Curiosity: Magnets and Genital Crush

Jakarta

An 11-year-old boy in Japan was rushed to hospital after nearly having his genitals crushed due to an experiment he carried out. The doctor said he placed two 1cm magnets on his penis out of curiosity.

It’s just that the magnet cannot be removed until the genitals swell. Even after being taken to the emergency unit, the health worker could not remove the magnet.

In a report published in the journal Clinical Case Reportsdoctors at Toho University Medical Center in Tokyo said that after two hours, the magnet stuck in his genitals was finally removed.

Medics said the boy was discharged later that day after reporting no problems. He returned to the outpatient clinic the next day, reported being able to urinate and admitted that he had not experienced any complications.

Furthermore, the doctor told how such an incident could damage the urethra.

The magnet is a neodymium magnet, one of the strongest types of magnets in the world. Magnets are widely used in hard disk drives and cell phones, as well as children’s toys.

Reports of medics removing magnets from the urinary tract or anus are becoming increasingly common, doctors warn. Given their size, children often accidentally swallow them too.

Neodymium is a material that begins to peel off and erode in stomach acid. The risk becomes more extreme if more than one magnet is swallowed, because if they separate they can twist parts of the intestines and stomach between them, thereby cutting off the blood supply.
