“Child Dies of Marburg Virus in Tanzania’s Kagera Region: Health Officials Confirm 6th Death”

DAR ES SALAAM, April 29 (Xinhua) — Tanzanian health authorities announced on Saturday that an 18-month-old child died of Marburg virus disease (MVD) in Kagera region (northwest).

The death of the child brings to six the number of patients killed by the disease since it emerged in the region on March 21, 2023. Health Minister Ummy Mwalimu announced in a statement when publishing an update on the disease.

The Minister specified that the child was that of a woman in whom the disease had been diagnosed and who was undergoing treatment in an isolation centre.

Ms Mwalimu said that since the onset of the disease on March 21, nine cases have been reported, of which three patients have recovered and six, including the child and a health worker, have died.

She said 211 of the 212 people placed in solitary confinement were able to return home after being monitored for 21 days and were not affected by the disease.

Ms Mwalimu said the government was following World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines on outbreak surveillance, including for MVD. END
