The police received information about the case on 2 April, writes Sørvest police district in a press release.
– On Tuesday 2 April, the police received a report that a child suffered a cardiac arrest and died during anesthesia at Stavanger University Hospital (SUS). We will investigate the tragic case to investigate what has happened, says police attorney Tove Marie Haver.
– The boy’s family is having a terrible time. They are completely devastated by grief, and are in shock that this could happen, says the bereaved’s lawyer Anne Kroken to Stavanger Aftenblad.

The newspaper writes that it concerns a boy under school age.
– The parents need answers to what has happened, and experience this as an extremely difficult situation. Beyond that, they now need rest, says Kroken further.

Awaiting autopsy
Prosecutor Haver does not want to go into detail about the course of events.
– We have taken initial investigative steps, including questioning. Further witness interviews still remain, and we are also awaiting the autopsy report, she says.
The police have no further information at this time, and will not comment further on the case today.
The hospital reported the case to both the police and the Norwegian Health Authority.
Rogaland’s county doctor Anders Neset tells NRK that they will not carry out their own investigations until the Norwegian Health Authority considers how to follow up the case.
The hospital apologizes
Clinic manager Geir Lende for clinic A at the hospital, which is responsible for anaesthesia, says that the incident has affected the hospital.
– This is the worst thing that can happen to parents. And it is also very painful for our employees who have been involved, he adds NRK. He goes on to say that the main priority now is to take care of the child’s next of kin and the hospital’s staff.
– We think that such cases are incredibly painful, and it is something we are terribly sorry for. Such incidents happen from time to time, but fortunately rarely, Lende adds VG.
