Beginning in January 2023, undocumented families will be able to access subsidies to care for at least 600 children aged 6 weeks to 13 years under the NYC Promise initiative.

La Colmena is one of the organizations in charge of distributing these subsidies.

“This is an immediate childcare solution so that parents can have more options, for example, to train, and in the shelter, in the hostel, they can’t leave them,” says Arlette Cepeda, deputy director of La Colmena .

The program has $10 million and is a relief for new migrants, according to Mayor Eric Adams.

However, some sectors have expressed concern that the program may encourage illegal work, taking into account the fact that asylum applications and work permits can take an average of 4 years to process.

“For people who don’t have the legal papers to work, unfortunately it’s difficult and it’s true that they can’t work because it’s illegal and against immigration law,” said Henry Grullon, political adviser to the Republican Party in New York.

To qualify for this program, families must demonstrate that their income is 300% below federal poverty levels. Ángela González, Voice of America, New York.
