Child attacked by dog in Ledegem: arm and leg amputated

In Ledegem, a one-and-a-half-year-old boy was attacked by a dog on Wednesday morning.

The boy was staying with his father at the time. The injuries proved so severe that his arm and leg had to be amputated. The father lost a thumb in the accident.

It was the neighbor who was suddenly surprised on Wednesday morning by a loud knock on the window of his house. “My neighbor panicked and yelled at me to call 911 right away,” he said. ‘At their request, I held several sheets against the child’s wounds to stem the bleeding. In the meantime, the dog had been locked up in the living room,’ said the neighbor, who was still shaken by the events. It is still unclear why the four-year-old Stafford attacked the child. At the time of the events, the father was alone with his son.

The injuries soon proved to be serious. After treatment at the AZ Delta in Roeselare, the child was transferred to the UZ in Ghent. They could only amputate an arm and a leg. Mayor Bart Dochy (CD&V) regrets the incident and indicates that a stafford is often seen as aggressive, but that this dog was well cared for. “After consulting with the parents, the vet put the dog to sleep Wednesday morning.”
