Chikungunya // ARS calls for vigilance in the face of the circulation of the virus in Saint-Gilles-les-Bains

The Regional Health Agency (ARS) of Reunion has confirmed several cases of chikungunya in Saint-Gilles-les-Bains and encourages the population to redouble their efforts to prevent the spread of the virus.

On September 20, 2024, the ARS of La Réunion announced the confirmation of six indigenous cases of chikungunya in Saint-Gilles-les-Bains since August 23, 2024. As summer approaches and with it conditions conducive to the proliferation of mosquitoes, health authorities are calling for collective vigilance to limit the spread of the virus. A suspected case has also been reported in the Ermitage area of Saint-Paul, and is currently awaiting confirmation.

Faced with this situation, the ARS has implemented a series of measures aimed at limiting the circulation of the virus. Vector control teams intervene immediately upon suspicion of a case, without waiting for official confirmation by the Associated National Reference Center for Arboviruses (CNRa). Field actions include the elimination of larval breeding sites, the application of insecticide and larvicide treatments, as well as raising awareness among residents about essential preventive measures.

The teams are mainly working around the homes and workplaces of infected people, and are distributing repellents to at-risk populations. At the same time, active surveillance is being carried out to identify any other suspected cases. This rapid and coordinated mobilization aims to stem the spread before the arrival of the southern summer, a period during which mosquito proliferation is at its peak.

As with dengue fever, chikungunya is transmitted by the tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), which is very present in Reunion. The ARS reminds us that everyone can be affected, from infants to the elderly, and stresses the importance of preventive measures to combat the mosquito. Among the recommendations, the regular elimination of larval breeding sites is essential. The population is invited to remove anything that can retain water around their home: empty cups, gutters, tires, plants, and cover water tanks.

Protecting yourself from mosquito bites is just as crucial. Using repellent sprays, mosquito nets, and wearing long clothing are simple but effective ways to avoid bites. If you experience symptoms such as fever, joint pain, severe fatigue, or headaches, it is recommended to consult a doctor immediately.

Although the end of the southern winter still results in a low density of mosquitoes, the arrival of summer in the coming weeks could exacerbate the situation. “All stakeholders and the population must remain vigilant,” emphasizes the ARS, which continues to work closely with municipal services to prevent a wider epidemic. The public health service has also raised awareness of the situation among all health professionals and medical establishments, so that they are ready to respond effectively in the event of new cases.

If you have symptoms consistent with chikungunya, it is important to seek medical attention promptly. In cases of severe forms, such as abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or inability to hydrate, it is advisable to contact emergency services immediately.

The ARS invites residents to monitor their state of health, particularly if they live in areas where cases have been reported, such as Saint-Gilles-les-Bains, Saint-Paul, or Saint-Louis.

The current situation, although under control, requires collective mobilization to prevent a wider spread of chikungunya in Reunion. The preventive actions of the ARS, combined with the daily actions of the population, are essential to limit the proliferation of mosquitoes and protect public health. As summer approaches, the fight against chikungunya is more than ever a health priority on the island.
