Chiefs remain undefeated and beat 49ers; Commanders crush Panthers

California. Patrick Mahomes recovered from two interceptions to make some big plays with his feet and the Kansas City Chiefs remained the only undefeated team in the NFL, beating the San Francisco 49ers 28-18 on Sunday in a rematch of the Super Mug.

The stakes and quality of the game were not at the same level as what happened eight months ago, when Mahomes and the Chiefs (6-0) beat the 49ers (3-4) 25-22 in overtime to achieve their third Super Bowl title in five years.

Although the result was the same, with Kansas City winning its fifth consecutive victory over San Francisco, including two Super Bowls.

The game came at a potentially heavy price for San Francisco, as their star receiver Brandon Aiyuk had to leave the game with an assist after taking a hit to his right knee after catching a pass in the first half. There was no immediate report on the severity of the injury.

Aiyuk’s absence proved to be critical during a key moment late in the third quarter, when the 49ers were on a roll with a chance to erase a 14-12 deficit.

A communication error between backup catcher Ronnie Bell and the quarterback Brock Purdy converted on a Chris Roland-Wallace interception. The Chiefs then turned that into a touchdown thanks in part to a 33-yard run by Mahomes that was his longest in the regular season for the quarterback.

Mahomes then scored on a 1-yard run on fourth-and-goal for his first rushing touchdown since the 2022 season.

Mahomes finished 16 of 27 for 154 yards and had eight interceptions in exchange for six passes. touchdown in the campaign. But that has been enough for Kansas City to become the 10th defending Super Bowl champion to start the following season with six consecutive victories.

Panthers sink in NFC South

Marcus Mariota replaced the injured one quarterback rookie Jayden Daniels early in the second quarter, Dante Fowler returned an interception 67 yards for touchdown and the Washington Commanders routed the Carolina Panthers 40-7 on Sunday.

Concern about Daniels’ condition overshadowed the victory after the second overall pick in the NFL draft, and the current favorite for offensive rookie of the year, left the game with a rib injury. His mother posted on social media that “he is fine,” and given the lopsided outcome, it would have been more surprising if Daniels returned and the 2023 Heisman Trophy winner spent the second half on the bench chatting and laughing with his teammates.

The Commanders (5-2) managed to play well without him most of the game after he had 46 yards rushing and completed a few passes on the first offensive series. At that point they already had an advantage on the scoreboard thanks to Fowler’s interception, the first of two that Andy Dalton suffered, the second ended in the hands of Emmanuel Forbes, who returned to play after being ruled out the previous week.

The defense dominated, allowing 180 yards, stopping seven of 10 third downs and sacking Dalton twice.

With Mariota at the helm, Washington surged and racked up 421 yards against the Panthers (1-6), who allowed the most points of any team in the Super Bowl era in the first six games of a season. Mariota completed 18 of 23 passes for 205 yards with passes from touchdown to tight ends Zach Ertz and Ben Sinnott.
