Chief Researcher Advises Against Mass Vaccination in Russia Despite Increase in Coronavirus Incidence

Despite the increase in the incidence of coronavirus in Russia, mass vaccination against the infection should not be resorted to. This was stated in a conversation with URA.RU by the chief researcher at the N. F. Gamaleya Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology, virologist, professor Anatoly Altstein.

“Mass vaccination is not needed now. The fact is that the virus changes throughout the pandemic. The variants of COVID-19 that are going on now are not very contained by the current vaccine. Another thing is that this vaccine is needed to protect against severe illness and death. Older people and those vulnerable to infection are highly recommended to get vaccinated. It is not necessary to use it widely now, because they are trying to develop a new vaccine that is more consistent with the variants that are now spreading,” said Anatoly Altstein.

As for the current rise in the incidence of COVID-19, the virologist does not expect it to be at a high level. “There shouldn’t be severe morbidity. It goes on and may even increase. But this cannot be compared with what happened a year and a half ago. Therefore, it makes sense to vaccinate risk groups with available vaccines until the new variant is ready. Or rather, it is ready, but has not yet passed the necessary tests and is not widely used,” the professor explained.

Earlier, the head of the Russian Ministry of Health, Mikhail Murashko, noted the increase in the incidence of coronavirus in the country. According to the analytical company Headway Company, from January to August 2023, regions increased purchases of coronavirus vaccines.
