Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan wished the Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan on his 100th birthday. Pinarayi said that VS is a leader who has always stood against exploitation along with the toiling masses. The chief minister wished him on his birthday through a Facebook post.

Comrade VS Achuthanandan’s life has traveled along with the history of modern Kerala. The role played by leaders including VS in transforming Kerala into today’s Kerala is undeniable.

Before the formation of united Kerala, he led brilliant struggles against tyranny, monarchy, nepotism and imperialism. After the formation of United Kerala, his interventions through popular struggles, as a people’s representative, as the leader of the opposition and as the chief minister are noteworthy. VS is a leader who has stood against exploitation along with the ever-toiling masses.
Joining the Undivided Communist Party at the age of 17 in 1940, VS later played a vital role in building the CPI(M) and making it a major political force. In 1964, when there was a split in the Communist Party, VS was the only surviving leader of the 32 members who left the National Council and formed the CPI(M). He rose to become the state secretary and member of the politburo of the CPI(M).
He used his youth and youth to organize the agricultural laborers in Kuttanad and lead the rope workers’ strike.

We know that VS was prominent during the Punnapra Vayalar struggle itself. That life is the precious link that connects that time with the present. In all phases of his life he showed intense zeal for war. That struggle has spread in areas including environmental protection.
He has stood with the lower classes throughout his life. Therefore, the centenary of VS is an occasion of joy and pride not only for the labor movements, progressive movements and the Communist Party but also for the entire country. Happy birthday to Comrade VS.
