The National Assembly Special Committee on Personnel Hearings continues its second day of verification of qualifications and morality by holding a personnel hearing for Chief Justice Lee Kyun-yong.

At yesterday’s hearing, the ruling and opposition parties engaged in a fierce battle over the controversy over the independence of the judiciary and various suspicions surrounding this candidate.

As the hearing concludes today, the ruling and opposition parties are expected to clash again over the adoption of the review progress report and determination of eligibility.

The opposition party, including the Democratic Party of Korea, claims that the acceptance of the nomination of candidate Lee, who is close to President Yoon Seok-yeol, is a violation of the separation of powers, and plans to continue to verify the candidate’s wife’s property and controversies related to gifting of children.

On the other hand, the ruling party, the People Power Party, refute these allegations as speculation and plans to highlight that candidate Lee is the right person with the capabilities and qualifications to normalize the judiciary under the current Supreme Court Chief Justice Kim Myung-soo’s regime.

Considering the predecessor’s term of office and the approval process, the motion to appoint this candidate must be processed at the plenary session of the National Assembly to be held tomorrow (21st).

However, as the opposition party maintains its opinion that this candidate is unqualified, and the plenary session is scheduled to vote on the motion for the arrest of Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung and the motion for the dismissal of Prime Minister Han Deok-soo, difficulties are expected in the confirmation process after the hearing.
