Chief Artist of Latvian National Theater Resigns amidst Management Conflict

The decision to leave the theater has also been made by the chief artist of the Latvian National Theater Reinis Suhanovs, reports Latvijas Radio.

“I wrote my resignation in order to be honest with myself, with both the previous and the new member of the board of the National Theater. Knowing that the artistic director Elmārs Senkov’s employment contract ended on August 1, so that we, the entire artistic team, would have a single legal status. As a relatively free person, I I have never liked to be in a forced situation and to impose myself on others,” Suhanov explained his decision to Latvijas Radio.

As the portal 1188.lv already reported, yesterday, August 1, the new theater director Māris Vītols admitted that the director Elmārs Senkovs will not continue to be the artistic director of the Latvian National Theatre.

From July 24, the former Minister of Education and Science, director of the society “Latvijas Kulturas projekti” Vītols began to perform the duties of the director of the National Theater. He replaced the former director of the Latvian National Theater, Jānis Vimba, who performed these duties from June 27, 2018.

When the new director took office, the artistic team of the theater led by Senkov, which also included Suhanovs, choreographer Elīna Gediņa and composer Edgars Mākens, could not agree with Vītola on the future operating model of the theater.
