Doctors from the Lambayeque Regional Hospital performed a successful breast-conserving surgery, with a clip and metal guide placement technique, on a 31-year-old patient diagnosed with stage III-A breast cancer. This is the first time that such an operation has been carried out in the region.
Oncology gynecologists Elmer Céspedes Mendoza, Iván Pinto Larrea and Luis Garnique Arias, They were responsible for this medical feat, which is the starting point for this type of surgery in the north of the country.
The specialists mentioned that the patient Katya Díaz Gonzáles He was admitted approximately 5 months ago with a tumor of the right breast measuring approximately 10 centimeters. After a biopsy, they confirmed that it was an infiltrating carcinoma.
Staged process
Due to the tumor size and the characteristics of the lesion, it was not operable in the first instance. Given this, the treatment of 16 sessions of neoadjuvant chemotherapy and, after that, perform surgical management.
The process was divided into stages. The first was the placement of a clip in the tumor, prior to chemotherapy, which helped as a marker to facilitate the location of the lesion and, thus, achieve oncological safety to perform adequate surgery.
After that, aided by ultrasound guidance, a metal guide was placed to proceed to the surgery resection of the entire lesion, achieving total conservation of the breast and reducing the risk of recurrence.
Finally, they placed new metal clips that allow a special marking of the area where Katya will receive complementary radiotherapy.
Joint work
The specialists highlighted the joint work with the services of Radiology, Pathology, Surgical Center, Hospitalization, Oncology and Radiotherapy. At present, the patient shows a favorable evolution and performs all her activities without problems.
