‘Chicago PD’: LaRoyce Hawkins suggests Atwater may have a love interest for the next season
Chicago PD is the second season of the NBC Chicago franchise. It has aired since 2014 and expands the world created with the Chicago Fire TV series in 2012. The series follows officials in Chicago’s fictional 21st district and features actor Jason Beghe as Detective Sergeant Hank Voight, LaRoyce Hawkins as Officer Kevin Atwater, who will play a leading role in season four, and Marina Squerciati as Officer Kim Burgess. The series’ eighth finale aired on May 26, 2021, and rumors of Atwater’s plot – and his love life in particular – are already floating around for the ninth season.
Atwater’s storylines have grown darker in the last few episodes
Hawkins first appeared as Officer Atwater in the Chicago Fire, where he had a small recurring role. When NBC started the Chicago PD spinoff, Hawkins continued to play Atwater and was upgraded to a main character. According to the IMDb, this was Hawkins’ first major TV role.
Over the course of the seasons, Atwater’s storyline has dealt with modern, real-life events such as the coronavirus (COVID-19). Lately, Atwater’s plot has taken a darker turn as Chicago PD tackled the ongoing social crisis surrounding police brutality and racism. Recently, Chicago PD began “reporting on the Black Lives Matter movement,” reports US Weekly. “After Atwater decided to do the right thing – and stand against the Blue Wall in return – the police turned against him.”
Rick Eid, the Chicago PD showrunner, was interviewed by the magazine, leading up to the airing of season eight, and said: “[In Staffel acht] we’ll see that it’s hard to be both a proud, principled black man and a results-oriented, tough cop.
