Nature’s Metropolis, a book that celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, is one of the great classics of environmental history. The book chronicles in great detail the flows of energy and resources that led to the rapid emergence of the city of Chicago during the 19th and 20th centuries. While cities have always maintained a relationship of transformative exchanges with their hinterland, the example of Chicago shows how seemingly innocuous technological innovations, as the invention of the refrigerated car for the transport of meat or that of the grain elevator, have increased the intensity of these exchanges… for better or for worse.
