Chicago Businesses Prepare Ahead of DNC Protests
CHICAGO – As the Democratic National Convention (DNC) approaches, set to commence this Monday, multiple businesses throughout Chicago are taking additional security measures to safeguard their properties amidst rising concerns about potential protests.
Increased Security Measures
Located on the Near West Side, the United Center is surrounded by new fencing while the streets are filled with trucks and a heavy police presence, features that are drawing scrutiny from local residents who aren’t accustomed to seeing such preparations.
Convention Details
The DNC will span four days, happening simultaneously at the United Center and McCormick Place. Early arrivals have been noted as delegates and journalists explore the venues in anticipation of the event.
Local Reactions
One resident expressed excitement at the influx of visitors, commenting, “It’s super awesome to see everyone out and about… the neighborhood is so lively and I think that’s really awesome.”
Protests Anticipated
Over a dozen protests are expected during the course of the convention, which is anticipated to draw a crowd of approximately 50,000 individuals, comprising delegates, guests, and about 15,000 media representatives.
Tightening Access and Frustration
Street closures have been in effect since Friday, causing frustration among residents who have encountered numerous parking changes. “They’ve changed it though, three times in the last week,” lamented one local.
Key Speakers at the DNC
The convention will feature prominent speakers including President Joe Biden, former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, as well as Hillary Clinton, all of whom are expected to support Kamala Harris and her running mate.
