CHICAGO – Everything is ready for the tenth anniversary of “Arts in the Dark“, el desfile de Halloween de Chicago.
The family-friendly event will take place on Saturday, October 19 from 6 pm to 8 pm downtown, with the parade route beginning on State Street and continuing south from Lake Street to Van Buren Street.
This year, the public will be able to enjoy unique floats, puppets and creative shows.
According to Chicago Loop Alliancethe purpose of the parade is to “sustain and elevate Chicago’s creative communities.” It is considered a “festival of artists” that brings together participants from major cultural organizations, youth programs and aspirants in different art disciplines from each neighborhood of Chicago.
Around 60,000 people are expected to attend and it is a free event open to the public.
According to the Chicago Loop Alliancethe parade will feature new elements to celebrate its 10th anniversary, including a tribute to “10 Creative Spirits” representing ten leaders in the world’s arts.
The “10 Creative Spirits” are as follows, according to the Chicago Loop Alliance:
- Dee Alexander – jazz singer
- Bril Barrett – tap dancer, founder and artistic director of MADD Rhythms, NEA Heritage Fellow
- Sandra Delgado – actress, singer, playwright, arts lawyer
- Hallie Gordon – an acclaimed youth theater advocate, former Artistic Producer and Artistic Director of Steppenwolf
- Gloria Groom – curator of the renowned Art Institute, winner of the French Legion of Honor
- J. Ivy – three-time GRAMMY Award winner, spoken word artist, musician, producer, arts attorney
- Margaret Murphy Webb – jazz vocalist, educator, producer, arts advocate, founder and executive director of the South Side Jazz Coalition, co-chair of the Chicago Year of Music initiative
- Tyrone Phillips – actor, director, founder and artistic director of Definition Theater
- Tim Samuelson – beloved Chicago cultural historian
- Sentrock – an esteemed and prolific Chicago street artist
