AGI – White pinstriped suit, sandals and swarming among the luxurious halls of ‘Casa Italia’. Chiara Bontempi thus waited for several hours for her Gianmarco, fresh world champion of the high jump, goal dreamed of, announced and achieved.
‘Gimbo’ Tamberi’s wife after hugging and kissing him in the moments following the triumph at the ‘National Athletics Center’ stadium in Budapest, she waited until after 2 in the morning to congratulate her husband in a ‘surprise’ party organized at ‘Casa Italia’.
Who is Clare
The reason for all this delay? Technical issues, or rather Gianmarco as a new world champion had to carry out anti-doping formalities with a urine test.
But who is Chiara Bontempi? Since 1 September last year, she has been the wife of the captain of the Italian athletics national team who has entered the history of Italian sport for having equaled Alberto Cova in conquering the ‘treble’, i.e. Olympic gold, world gold and European gold.
Tamberi, 31 years old from Civitanova Marche, has won even more than the Lombard middle-distance runner because on the bulletin board there are also world indoor gold, continental indoor gold and even the conquest of the Diamond League (at the time of Cova, however did not exist).
Together forever
Chiara, romantically linked to ‘Gimbo’ since 2009 (except for one month in 2013) or since she was 14 and he was 17, has very followed on Instagram with almost 56,000 contacts and almost a thousand photos published, above all of her life with Gianmarco, from last year’s wedding to her last snow holidays in Madonna di Campiglio, passing from honeymoon in the Maldives.
On 12 August, the wife of the new high jump world champion turned 28. She is from Ancona and her parents have a housewares shop in the Marche capital. In 2019 she graduated in Verona. On an emotional level she is defined passionate with a strong charactera leader.
Chiara follows Gianmarco to the matches but not to all, especially those with the national team. Her last wish before sitting down at the table to eat with her beloved: “Let’s hope to enter the new thing, but now I don’t want to think about it”. The new ‘nest’ of Chiara and ‘Gimbo’ will be on the hills between Ancona and Falconara Marittima.
The big emotion
“Gianmarco is an extraordinary husband, a golden boy, he transforms with me, he is very sweet and apprehensive, I’m very lucky” says Chiara when, now at 2 in the morning, she speaks to AGI in the hospitality house of the Italian expedition to the Championships World Cup in Budapest set up inside the ‘Ludwig Museum’.

“It’s a huge emotion, I wasn’t there at the 2016 World Indoor Championships when he won, I followed the Olympics on television but being in the front row in such an important event was incredible – he adds – I believed in the medal already at 2.33, I watched all the progressions on my phone but we waited until the end for victory also because this year he had very strong opponents fit: when he jumped 2.36, we got off a lot of weight”.
At the party at ‘Casa Italia’, among many, there were Gianmarco’s mother, Sabrina Piastrellini, his brother Gianluca (he is a good javelin thrower), his coach Giulio Ciotti with his brother Nicola, close friends and the federal president Stefano Mei. There was no father of ‘Gimbo’, Marco who trained his son throughout his career: the relationship between the two was definitively interrupted last March after several disputes.
