Chiapas Faces Increase in Respiratory Diseases Due to Cold Fronts: Nurse Urges Importance of Influenza Vaccination

Tuxtla Gutiérrez.- With the arrival of cold fronts, Chiapas faces an increase in respiratory diseases, with influenza, including the A-H1N1 and JN1 variants, being one of the main concerns. Samuel Cueto Indilí, nurse at the Tuxtla Gutiérrez Health Secretariat, urges the population to take preventive measures, highlighting the importance of annual vaccination.

In an interview, Cueto Indilí shared that at the vaccination post in the central square of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, 50 to 100 doses are being applied daily until 1:00 p.m. Annual vaccination is free and is essential to protect yourself, your family and those who share the same space at work or at home.

Statewide, more than one and a half million flu vaccines are expected to be administered. Vaccination, although it does not guarantee the absence of the disease, reduces its severity and strengthens the immune system. Cueto Indilí emphasizes that the vaccine is updated annually to adapt to the variants in circulation.

The nurse calls on the population not to self-medicate in case of respiratory symptoms, but to go to the doctor immediately. Furthermore, he highlights that vaccination is especially crucial for older adults and those with comorbidities.

Cueto Indilí reported that, although COVID-19 vaccines are not currently being administered, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) is expected to provide doses in the near future. Meanwhile, the focus remains on protecting the population against common respiratory diseases during the winter season.

The only requirement for vaccination is that the person be in good health. Those with symptoms such as sore throat, body aches, runny nose, high temperature or cold should postpone vaccination to avoid complications.

Cueto Indilí concluded by reiterating the effectiveness of vaccines and emphasizing the importance of prevention, especially in times of sudden temperature changes. The vaccination process will continue until March.
