This year, automobile exports reached an all-time high. The export amount in November also reached the highest on a monthly basis. As exports of high-priced eco-friendly cars began in earnest, mainly in the U.S. market, exports increased rapidly.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on the 14th that cumulative automobile exports as of November this year reached $64.5 billion (approximately 83.5 trillion won). Exports last month also reached an all-time high on a monthly basis, reaching $6.53 billion, surpassing the previous record set in March of this year ($6.5 billion). Accordingly, automobile exports this year are expected to exceed $70 billion.

By region, $33.1 billion, more than half of the total, was exported to the North American market this year, followed by the European Union (EU) with $10 billion, Asia with $5.3 billion, and the Middle East with $5.1 billion.

By car model, GM Korea’s Trailblazer ranked first with 194,838 units from January to November, followed closely by Hyundai Motor Company’s Kona (192,3242 units) and Avante (188,258 units). In addition, Trek, Niro, Tucson, Sportage, Morning, Palisade, and Seltos ranked in the top 10.

As of November, the Kona, Trex Avante, and Trailblazer recorded around 20,000 units, while the new electric vehicle Kia EV9 ranked 10th with 9,156 units exported.

Automobile production also recorded 370,000 units in November and 3.88 million units from January to November, exceeding last year’s 3.76 million units. It is expected that the number will exceed 4 million units in 5 years after 2018.

The impact of the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which raised concerns early this year, appears to be limited. Domestically produced electric vehicles were expected to take a hit because they cannot receive subsidies in the U.S. market, but exports of eco-friendly vehicles, including electric vehicles, actually increased. An official from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said, “Exports of high-priced eco-friendly vehicles, including the EV9, have increased in earnest, mainly in the U.S. market,” adding, “Exports of eco-friendly vehicles to the U.S. amounted to 17,000 units in November alone and 134,000 units from January to November, compared to last year. “It significantly exceeded 84,000 units,” he said.
