General Motors is recalling nearly 8,000 Chevrolet Equinox electric SUVs due to a perhaps dangerous issue with their Acoustic Vehicle alerting System (AVAS).
The recall, affecting vehicles produced after October 16,2024,targets the Equinox EV’s AVAS,designed to alert pedestrians to the presence of the quiet electric vehicle. The problem? The system is too quiet at speeds between 12 and 18 mph (20-30 km/h), potentially creating a safety hazard for pedestrians and those with visual or hearing impairments.
By the end of January 2025, approximately 7,606 Equinox EVs will require a service visit to address the issue. The solution is a simple firmware update, which will adjust the volume and sound profile of the AVAS to ensure adequate audibility.
This isn’t the first time an AVAS system has fallen short of safety standards. Previous instances, such as with the first-generation Jaguar I-Pace, highlighted the challenges of designing an effective and non-obtrusive warning sound. The I-Pace’s AVAS, such as, produced a sound likened to an approaching aircraft, potentially distracting pedestrians rather than alerting them to the vehicle’s presence.
The Chevrolet Equinox EV recall underscores the importance of continuous testing and refinement of safety features in electric vehicles. As the number of EVs on the road increases, ensuring pedestrian safety remains a critical priority for automakers.
GM is urging all owners of affected Equinox EVs to schedule a service appointment as soon as possible to receive the necessary firmware update. the update is expected to resolve the AVAS issue and enhance pedestrian safety.
This recall serves as a reminder of the ongoing evolution of automotive safety technology and the importance of addressing potential flaws promptly to protect both drivers and pedestrians.
