At the end of last year, the chess table, chess pieces and matching chairs disappeared. A call on Facebook to put the artwork back in its place was widely shared, but yielded nothing. Until yesterday morning.

“I got a call from the municipality,” says Noordenbos. “They told me that they had taken the artwork with them just before Christmas. They were then taking a tour of the city to pick up combustible items from the street. Then the artwork ended up in the rubbish.”

Noordenbos is used to the fact that his artworks sometimes disappear because he makes them special for public space. He says he is not angry. “Bad luck, they are only people. And so much of my work is disappearing.” The artist is already working on new ideas. “I’m working on a giant scrabble with letters measuring 60 by 60 centimeters. That would be nice for the city.”
