Chess.com Bans Russian Grandmaster Denis Khismatullin After Conflicts at World Championship and Alleged Trips to Northwestern Military District Zone

One of the world’s two largest online platforms used by chess players, Chess.com (blocked by Roskomnadzor at the request of the Prosecutor General’s Office), banned Russian grandmaster Denis Khismatullin from participating in prize tournaments. This happened after a conflict with the Pole Jan-Krzysztof Duda at the World Championship, when information was revealed about certain trips of the chess player Khismatullin to the Northwestern Military District zone.

“A heated discussion began on social networks, where facts began to emerge that I, together with Karyakin, had repeatedly visited the special operation zone with humanitarian missions. After that, Chess.com sent an email notifying me that from now on I was prohibited from any social activity on their site,” Khismatullin said. His statement published in the telegram channel of chess player Sergei Karyakin.

Polish grandmaster Jan-Krzysztof Duda refused to shake hands Khismatullin at the World Rapid Chess Championship. Then the game between them ended in a draw. The International Chess Federation (FIDE) commented on the scandal, saying that a handshake is not mandatory for chess players. Khismatullin himself noted that Duda’s refusal to shake his hand aroused admiration in the Western press.
