40 vehicles have been involved in accidents in the US state of Maryland. Thirteen people were injured and traffic was backed up for hours on the busy Chesapeake Bay bridge on the US 50 freeway.
According to regional authorities, 23 vehicles initially collided in a pile-up. A series of other collisions further along involved a further 20 vehicles.
Two people were taken to hospital with serious injuries and eleven other people also had injuries. No one would be in danger. The road has now been reopened. It is unclear what caused the complex pile-up.
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge is actually two bridges and is of great importance to regional traffic. The first part opened in 1952, the other bridge opened in 1973. The bridge connects the eastern coast of Maryland with the region that includes the major cities of Baltimore, Annapolis and Washington DC.
