In the Carpathians, the “chervona ruta” – the national symbol of Ukraine – has blossomed. These flowers are listed in the Red Book of our country, which also includes wild garlic, so they can be fined for selling it.

East Carpathian rhododendron flower (Rhododendron myrtifolium), which is better known as “Chervona Ruta”, is now at the peak of its flowering. It grows only in the highlands, so it can be found in the region of Mount Hoverla. “Red Rue” is not only in Ukraine, but also in the mountains of Romania, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Poland and the Czech Republic.
The plant is found in subalpine and alpine meadows between pine and juniper in the Carpathians, at an altitude of 1600-2050 meters. The population of this “folk” flower is decreasing every year. This plant from the heather family, an evergreen shrub, 10-40 cm high, blooms for only three weeks.
Since ancient times, these flowers have been considered mysterious, because they grow in the mountains. According to the Carpathian legend, the plant blooms red once every 10 years, and if you pluck it and give it to someone who does not reciprocate love, the person will definitely fall in love in return.
But this is only a legend. In real life, it is forbidden to tear the East Carpathian Red Book rhododendron, otherwise you will be fined.
