MusicCher regrets a “huge mistake” she made with her iconic song ‘Believe’ from 1998. In a look back at the 25-year-old hit, the singer says that she lost a lot of money because of that mistake.
The 77-year-old superstar told the BBC Radio 2 program ‘Tracks Of My Years’ that she had neglected to ask for her name to be included as a writer, even though she had written an important line in the song. Part of the money raised by songs goes to the performing artist, but writers can also – or perhaps even especially – count on a reward. The copyright fee can increase significantly in the event of hits. The single ‘Believe’ sold 11 million copies worldwide.
“You can’t even imagine it, but about thirty people contributed to it. And I was so stupid. I didn’t ask. I didn’t even get the copyright,” Cher says in the interview. The singer coined the sentence: “I’ve had time to think it through, and maybe I’m too good for you.”
The British press calculated that Cher must have lost hundreds of thousands of euros. She does not mention a specific amount herself. “It sold 11 million copies. I could have gotten a lot of money.” That continues to increase, because every time a song is played on the radio, heard on TV or streamed – ‘Believe’ has been played more than half a billion times on Spotify alone and almost 350 million times on YouTube – the rights holders receive money.
