Cherries prevent and treat gout
Launching from Healthline.com, cherries are good for gout sufferers.
In a 2011 study, consuming 8 ounces of cherry juice daily for four weeks lowered uric acid.
Not only cherry juice, cherry concentrate is also able to lower uric acid levels. A study said cherry extract was more effective at lowering high uric acid than pomegranate concentrate.
Another study found that eating 10 fresh cherries per day could reduce the risk of gout attacks by up to 35%. In fact, the combination of cherries and allopurinol, a gout drug, can reduce the risk of gout attacks by up to 75%.
The efficacy of cherries in lowering uric acid is due to the fact that cherries contain anthocyanins which have anti-inflammatory properties.
These properties make cherries also effective in reducing swelling that occurs due to high uric acid.
Unfortunately, there is no standard dose of cherry consumption to reduce high uric acid.
The Arthritis Foundation recommends consuming a handful of cherries or drinking a glass of tart cherry juice per day to treat gout.
However, it’s a good idea to consult a doctor before consuming cherries as a gout remedy.
