Ukrainian Soccer Erupts in Controversy After Chernomorets Suffers Defeat
Ukrainian football is embroiled in controversy following Chernomorets Odessa’s 0-3 loss to Alexandria in the 15th round of the UPL. Captain Bogdan Butko and Odessa press representative Vitaly Khemiy have both publicly criticized commentator Vitaly Volochai for his coverage of the match, which saw two Chernomorets players sent off.
Butko, a veteran defender, took to his Instagram to express his outrage. "What happened today in the game with us is not the first time, and I can’t remain silent anymore," he wrote.
He alleged prejudiced officiating, questioning the referee‘s decisions and claiming Volochai seemed to be "playing for" one team. Butko recounted several contentious moments, including what he perceived as a misjudged yellow card to Chernomorets’ goalkeeper and a blatant foul by an Alexandria player that went unpunished.
"The judge showed with this that ‘you guys came here for no reason,’" Butko lamented, "Why are you even training? You came here and played the game."
Condemning the officials, Butko stated, "Guys, you can make money this way, but it is not necessary at all. They are corrupt, like you and your system, and those who earn money this way."
Adding fuel to the fire, Vitaly Khemiy, on his Telegram channel, directly addressed Volochai. "Your work today is disappointing and unprofessional," he stated, further criticizing Volochai’s perceived lack of preparation and calling him out for "humiliating the team in public."
Volochai defended himself, claiming his critical commentary after the second red card, in which he exclaimed, "God, what clownery, it’s just a circus," referred only to the playing situation and not the team itself.
"I believe I have not offended anyone. And how can I offend anyone? I didn’t say anything bad about the players, the coaches, or the club," Volochai told reporters.
However, his words did little to quell the controversy.
The incident sheds light on the heated tensions surrounding refereeing in Ukrainian football. With accusations of bias and corruption swirling, the Chernomorets players and staff feel betrayed by the officiating and targeted by the commentary. This controversy underlines the urgent need for transparency and accountability within the sport, both on and off the pitch. Only with a renewed commitment to fair play can Ukrainian football truly thrive.
