The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reports that they have lost contact with a nuclear power plant ChernobylTuesday (8/3), after the nuclear power plant Ukraine it was taken Russia.
“There are indications that remote data transmissions from the security monitoring system installed at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant have been lost,” IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said in a statement. AFP.
The statement continued, “The agency is checking the status of security monitoring systems at other locations in Ukraine and will provide further information as soon as possible.”
The IAEA uses the term “security monitoring system” to describe technical policies in the regulation of nuclear materials and activities at nuclear power plants.
This policy is carried out to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons, by detecting the misuse of these materials early.
In addition, the agency also expressed their concern over the fate of the staff there after Russia took control of the nuclear facility. According to the IAEA, the staff’s condition is getting worse.
More than 100 technical staff and guards were trapped there. They also worked for 13 days in a row since Russia took over the facility.
Seeing this condition, the IAEA urged Russia to allow workers to rest. The IAEA emphasized that regular breaks and schedules are crucial to maintaining the security of the region.
“I am deeply concerned about the difficulties and stress experienced by the staff at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, as well as the risk this (event) poses to nuclear security,” Grossi said.
“I urge the forces controlling the area to immediately facilitate the safe rotation of personnel there.”
Grossi also offered that the IAEA could visit Chernobyl in order to secure this nuclear facility from all parties, considering that data transmission has now been cut off and Ukrainian regulators can only contact the nuclear power plant via email.
Russia took over the Chernobyl nuclear power plant on the first day of the invasion on February 24. This nuclear power plant is located in the exclusive nuclear zone and was once a radioactive waste reservoir.
Apart from Chernobyl, Russia has succeeded in controlling the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, Zaporizhzhia, which is also located in Ukraine. This nuclear power plant has six nuclear reactors that are more modern than Chernobyl.
The IAEA said two reactors at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant were still working. In addition, nuclear power plant staff work on a rotational system and the radiation level there is still stable.
