General-Koenig Avenue in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin (Manche), building the future training center of the Union of Metallurgical Industries and Trades (UIMM) make good progress. Work began in September and Sandrine Boyer, director of the Grand Ouest Normandie training center, intends to welcome the first students at the end of August.
An investment of 7 million euros
This work concerns the construction ofa 2,000 m building2, with some workshops, from classrooms and theadministration, and the renovation of a 2,000 m building2 also, dedicated to workshops. An “industry gallery” will make the connection. An amphitheater, two CAO-DAO rooms and convivial spaces should make this center “a real campus”.
The current premises of Les Marettes, at La Glacerie, which are mainly used for continuing education, will then be transferred to Avenue du Général-Koenig.
We will initially welcome around a hundred young people on a work-study basis, and 250 in the long term.
For the UIMM training division, this represents an investment of 7 million euros, with assistance under the recovery plan.
Doors open until Saturday
The UIMM Grand Ouest Normandie training center has been organizing private open houses since Tuesday and until Saturday January 22 on its site in the ZAC des Marettes at La Glacerie. Due to the pandemic, appointments are held on prior registration.
Each year, on the various sites, more than 500 apprentices in initial training (CAP, Bac pro and BTS) and more than 2,500 learners in continuing education (employees and job seekers) are welcomed to anticipate the development needs of companies. industrial. The objective of these open days is obviously to discover industrial trades, equipment, existing and future training. “These are professions that are still too little known, young people do not see all the possibilities available to them”, agrees the director of the training center, Sandrine Boyer.
To participate in these open days, you must therefore register on the website (www.formation-industries-bn.fr/portes-ouvertes) or by telephone on 02 33 54 55 06.

Attract young people in training
The goal is for the building to have an attractive effect and reinforces interest in industrial trades, following the example of the Trades Olympiad where five young Normans shone, bringing back gold and silver in boilermaking.
Metallurgy globally represents 300 companies in the department and 17,000 jobs. A quarter of these employees are over 50 years old.
There is a very strong demand from companies, both principals and their subcontractors. We estimate the recruitment needs between 500 and 1,000 positions per year.
“We are obviously looking to bring in skills, but we strongly believe in training young people. And in trades under pressure such as boilermaking, piping and welding, we need to transmit the skills. Learning is the best way to achieve this. »
The best proof, he adds, is that 85% of young graduates stay in the company where they were trained. For a job, but also the pursuit of studies.
An expanded training offer
With this tool, the UIMM training center will also expand its offer. Alongside the CAP Industrial Achievements in boilermaking or welding and the BTS Design and industrialization in shipbuilding will be developed Bac pro in maintenance of connected production systems, technician in industrial boilermaking, and BTS in electrotechnics and maintenance of systems production systems option .
