ANIMALS – After freeing “the loneliest elephant in the world”, American singer Cher fights for the cause of a gorilla. She wants to save him from an artificial enclosure, at the top of a shopping mall in Bangkok, Thailand, where he spent three decades, report The Guardian this Friday December 11.

The gorilla named Bua Noi was brought to Thailand in 1988 and has spent much of its life in an enclosure in Pata, a private zoo, long criticized by animal welfare activists. The American singer expressed “her deep concern” about the gorilla’s living conditions, in a letter to the Thai Minister of the Environment, indicates the British daily.

The defense charity founded by Cher, Free the Wild, even offered to fund the transfer of the gorilla to a sanctuary in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It would be for the animal a “home of peace and dignity where it could live its life in a natural environment”, specified Cher in its letter.

On Twitter, the American artist had called for the solidarity of the Thais on December 6. “Bangkok residents, I know you will be understanding. Please help me stop the torture of innocent animals. It’s a sin. Please help me bring peace to these animals and set them free, ”she wrote.

Contacted by The Guardian, the owner of the zoo did not wish to react. However, he has already denied in the local press the animal abuse accusations targeting the zoo.

Cher has been fighting for several years to save abused animals. Last month, she notably campaigned to save the elephant Kaavan, who lived in dire conditions in a zoo in Islamabad, Pakistan. She contributed financially to his transfer to a wildlife reserve in Cambodia and met Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on November 27 to thank him for giving “the opportunity to take Kaavan to Cambodia”.
