Cher Apologizes After Inappropriate Tweet About George Floyd: “I’m So Sorry If I Upset Anyone” | Celebrities

On Friday, Cher wrote that she spoke to her mother about the criminal trial against the cop who last year grounded Floyd for minutes with fatal consequences. “I said, Mom, it may sound crazy but I keep thinking that maybe I could have helped if I had been there,” the singer said in a now-deleted tweet. The tweet provoked a lot of criticism with some accusing her of having the “ white savior complex. ” In addition, a white person provides assistance to non-white people in a superior way.

Cher now understands that the statement went wrong for many. “I just called my girlfriend Karen,” she writes. “I told her what happened and realized that you can anger and hurt people by being ignorant of whether something is inappropriate. I know people apologize when they’re in trouble and I’m terribly sorry if I upset anyone in the Black Lives Matter movement. ”

Floyd, an unarmed black man, died in May last year after police officer Derek Chauvin, 45, pressed his knee to Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes during his arrest. The officer is currently on trial for second-degree accidental murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Floyd’s death sparked outrage worldwide and many protests from the Black Lives Matter movement.
