Cher apologizes after being slammed for his George Floyd tweet

Cher has apologized following backlash for a tweet she shared regarding George Floyd’s death. Fans of the singer accused her of having a “white savior complex.”

The 74-year-old singer shared two tweets on Saturday following a controversial tweet she wrote and then quickly deleted that suggested that if she had been there when Floyd died, she could have helped.

In her first tweet, Cher said she struggled to know if she wanted to share the now deleted tweet, writing, “I fought with this Twt, because I thought some people wouldn’t understand, or I believed that an artist could have honest emotions about a human being, suffering and death, although it is only shown on TV. “

“You don’t know what I’ve done, who I am or what I believe.

Two hours later she tweeted an apology writing, “I just hung up with my friend Karen. I told him what happened and that you realized you can piss off people and hurt them by not knowing everything that is NOT appropriate to say. “

“I know Ppl apologizes when they are in a jam, BUT TO GOD, I AM SO SORRY if I disturb anyone in the Blk community,” she added. “I know my ❤️”

The apology comes after a now deleted tweet from the singer sparked controversy online amid the murder trial of former Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin on charges of third degree murder, manslaughter in second degree, as well as second degree murder.

“I was talking with mum and she said, ‘I watched the trial of the policeman who killed George Floyd and cried,” ”she wrote. “I said, ‘Mom, I know this is going to sound crazy, but… I kept thinking… .. Maybe if I was there…… I could have helped”.

While some fans understood the singer’s intentions in the tweet and accepted her apology, others tried to explain to her why the tweet was viewed negatively.

“Dear, I love you, but it’s not just people who don’t understand,” a user tweeted. “Thousands of people saw something wrong with what you said. No one is claiming the intention was wrong, but maybe you should try and see why it was problematic? Even if your ???? was in the right place ”

Someone else added, “Sometimes you can accidentally hurt people’s feelings even if it wasn’t your intention and if you’re in the limelight you have a bigger crowd listening when you speak. I don’t know if the witnesses saw the tweet, but maybe also contact them. ”

Days before his controversial tweet, Cher shared a tweet while apparently watching the trial, writing: “Feeling incredibly sad for the brave Ppl who stood to testify and Chronicle of George Floyd’s murder for everyone at see”.

She went on to add, “These were Americans who couldn’t / couldn’t get away from another human being having their last breath… crushed out of their body.
