Cheonan Hospital Professors Discover Protein that Inhibits Alzheimer’s Development.

[이데일리 이순용 기자] Professors at Cheonan Hospital affiliated with Soonchunhyang University recently identified a substance that can inhibit the development of Alzheimer’s disease, drawing attention from the academic world.

The substance discovered by Soonchunhyang University Cheonan Hospital’s Nephrology Department Professor Park Sam-el, Nuclear Medicine Professor Yuk-dong, and Soonchunhyang Medical Research Institute (SIMS) Professor Moon Jong-seok’s team found TXNIP. TXNIP is a protein involved in glucose metabolism and oxidative stress regulation. It is known to be involved in the development of diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases.

The professors confirmed that TXNIP causes an inflammatory reaction with astrocytes, which also affects the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Professor Park Sam-el said, “We confirmed that TXNIP causes oxidative stress in the body when combined with astrocytes, induces inflammation and apoptosis, and accelerates the development of dementia.”

This is the result of a study conducted using brain tissues of patients with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia animal models (mice), and human astrocytes. After all, TXNIP is a protein that accelerates the aging process within cells, and by controlling this key protein, the development of Alzheimer’s disease can also be suppressed.

Professor Park said, “This is the first case in which TXNIP has been confirmed as a control factor for dementia.

The research results were published in the May issue of Redox Biology, an international academic journal, under the title of ‘TXNIP contributes to induction of pro-inflammatory phenotype and caspase-3 activation in astrocytes during Alzheimer’s diseases’.
