The newly-built venues for the Chengdu Universiade have all reached the two-star standard for green buildings; new energy transportation services fully guarantee green travel during the Games; green and low-carbon experience devices have settled in the Universiade Village… The 31st Summer Universiade in Chengdu (referred to as the Chengdu Universiade) is approaching, and the construction of event venues, transportation, and a series of urban activities to welcome the Universiade all demonstrate the concept of green and low-carbon development.

The Chengdu Universiade will be held from July 28 to August 8. The “Chengdu Universiade Green and Low-Carbon Games Action Plan” was released as early as 2022, which clarified the implementation path of “source carbon reduction, process assessment, and end-point neutralization”, and focused on five aspects of “low-carbon energy, low-carbon venues, low-carbon transportation, low-carbon operations, and low-carbon participation”.

“Simple, safe, exciting” and “green, frugal, necessary” are the requirements and principles of the Chengdu Universiade respectively, and have attracted social attention. “Chengdu Universiade will run through the green and low-carbon concept throughout the whole process of preparation, holding and post-competition.” Du Shengge, full-time deputy director of the Urban Work Service Department of the Chengdu Universiade Executive Committee, said that he will strive to make the Chengdu Universiade a green and low-carbon sports event that is visible at home and abroad and demonstrates the effectiveness of the construction of a park city demonstration area.

It is understood that in terms of the construction and renovation of low-carbon venues, Chengdu has promoted the construction of new venues and the renovation of existing venues. Among the 49 venues for the Universiade, 36 venues have been renovated and upgraded from existing buildings, and 13 new venues have reached the two-star green building standard. Among them, the installation of light storage lighting street lights in the Phoenix Mountain Sports Park can achieve secondary energy saving and help reduce carbon emissions. Chengdu Xindu Xiangcheng Sports Center has built a rainwater recovery system. The retained rainwater can be converted into water for greening and maintenance of venues after being processed by the recovery system, saving more than 3,000 tons of water throughout the year.

In the Universiade Village in Chengdu, the traditional Chinese architectural technique “cold alley” also showed its skills. The summer is scorching, but the Chengdu Universiade Village Life Service Center has a cool breeze passing through the hall. “If this is designed as a closed hall, the construction area will reach 1,400 square meters, and the annual electricity consumption for air-conditioning will reach 70,000 kWh.” Zhong Peng, deputy chief architect of Southwest Architecture Design and Research Institute of China and chief director of Chengdu Universiade Village Design, said that the design team deliberately designed the shared hall as a semi-open street with two ends wide and the middle narrow. By guiding natural wind and increasing the wind speed in the passage to achieve the cooling effect, a lot of energy was saved.

The concept of green and low-carbon competition has also been deeply implanted in the city. The blue and white low-carbon Rubik’s Cube appeared in the main media center, Chengdu Universiade Village and other venues. People put their finished mineral water bottles, cans, coffee cups and other waste into the “Low-Carbon Rubik’s Cube”. As the official supplier of second-hand recycling services for the Chengdu Universiade, Zhuanzhuan Group will provide participating athletes with free loan services of second-hand mobile phones, and provide platform support for the recycling of surplus materials after the Chengdu Universiade.

At the same time, during the Chengdu Universiade, a total of 1,340 new energy buses and more than 1,000 new energy cars were used for transportation services to ensure green travel during the games. “More than 90% of the traffic from the Chengdu Universiade Village to the venues in the central urban area uses new energy vehicles, and 100% of the interior of the Universiade Village uses new energy shuttle buses.” Du Shengge said that 14 charging stations and 504 charging piles have been built to fully guarantee the charging needs of new energy vehicles during the competition. Strive to reach 70% of the green travel ratio during the competition.

The Chengdu Universiade will strengthen resource reuse in low-carbon operations. Chengdu Universiade Village has been fully integrated into Chengdu University in the way of “combining construction and reform”. Except for consumables, 95% of the materials in the athletes’ apartment rooms are leased, which can be recycled and reused; the contracted supply of local seasonal vegetable ingredients in the Universiade Village restaurant accounts for more than 70%, and the establishment of a smart central kitchen has increased the overall production capacity by 30%.

In terms of promoting the carbon neutrality of the event, in accordance with the low-carbon path of “source carbon reduction, process control, and end neutralization”, the Chengdu Municipal Bureau of Ecology and Environment entrusted a third-party verification agency with the qualifications of a United Nations-designated operating entity for preliminary calculations. After the Chengdu Universiade fully implements source emission reduction measures, it will reduce carbon emissions by about 26,000 tons. At the same time, we will try our best to publish the “Chengdu Universiade Green and Low-Carbon Competition Report” one month after the competition, extract typical cases, and form the Universiade’s green and low-carbon practice legacy.

The Chengdu Universiade from preparation to holding to the use of subsequent venues not only focuses on the present, but also has a long-term flow, highlighting the green and low-carbon concept and sustainable, long-term vision for the future. The holding of the Chengdu Universiade will boost the green development of the park city, and green and low-carbon is accelerating to become the most distinctive feature and the most lasting advantage of Chengdu.
