The Teodoro Maldonado Carbo hospital of the Ecuadorian Social Security Institute (IESS) has a new area in the chemotherapy room, with 30 latest generation recliners, which include a rotating screen to distract yourself by watching videos on different topics, such as nutrition, psychology or movies, while receiving their treatment.
This space seeks to improve the permanence of cancer patients, taking into account that the application of different drugs to destroy cancer cells can last several hours.
“Staying seated and connected to an IV is not easy. Sometimes there are side effects such as nausea, dizziness, poor appetite, discouragement, and muscle stiffness. This initiative is wonderful, because we are going to forget that we are in a hospital receiving chemotherapy, ”said Eugenia, a 65-year-old patient who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015.
In this new area, more than 18 health professionals will be available, including medical oncologists, hematologists, rheumatologists and nurses, who will verify and monitor the treatments and biological infusions.
The chemotherapy room is divided into three sections: treatment programming area for the control of the stock of medicines, another for preparation for the safety and identification of drugs and a last one for administration for the permanence of the patients.
The adaptation of the space began last February with electrical work, air conditioning, a waiting room and three laminar flow chambers, which are used to prepare the drugs used in chemotherapy sessions, the hospital said in a statement.
“Through the laminar flow chambers, we ensure an environment free of bacteria and viruses during the preparation of the drug so that, when it is prepared and packaged, there is no pyrogen, virus or biological agent within the scheme”, added Luis Martínez, head of Chemotherapy at the public sanatorium.
