Chemical Incident at Food Processing Plant in Konstanz Hospitalizes 25 People

Jan 12, 2024 at 7:07 PM Update: 2 minutes ago

25 people in the southern German city of Konstanz were hospitalized on Friday due to respiratory irritation caused by a chemical incident at a food processing plant. A highly toxic gas was accidentally released at that company.

Police say two chemicals were mixed in a vat on Thursday to make a cleaning solution. For unknown reasons, the temperature rose and a chemical reaction occurred. This caused a highly toxic gas to leak during the night from Thursday to Friday, which spread throughout the building. The barrel was in the cellar.

According to the fire brigade, the situation was “life-threatening”. A spokesperson says that a company employee acted quickly and appropriately after staff discovered a corrosive and steaming gas.

The employee wore protective clothing and moved the barrel with a forklift to an area where the gas could not cause damage. A specialized company must remove the barrel. The fire brigade says there were no risks to local residents.
