Chemical company 3M called to account at the Flemish Environmental Inspectorate

The company used the potentially harmful PFOS in their manufacturing process until 2002. Due to years of use, this substance is in the soil in the vicinity of the factory in Zwijndrecht, which causes problems during the Oosterweel work.

Last week, VTM Nieuws/Het Laatste Nieuws announced that 3M would illegally discharge the harmful chemical substance FBSA into the Scheldt. This is still being investigated by the Flemish authorities. The Environmental Inspectorate went on site last week and took new samples at the 3M factory in Zwijndrecht.

The inspectorate also sent a reminder to 3M on Friday. The company must “transfer all information about all substances that are produced and/or discharged and their harmfulness” by midnight at the latest.

After tomorrow’s hearing, the Inspectorate will examine together with Flemish Minister for the Environment Zuhal Demir (N-VA) whether additional measures should be taken for the environment and whether legal action will be taken.
