Explosion occurred at PT Mitsubishi Chemical Indonesia (MCCI), Cilegon, Banten. One person was reported injured in the incident. The explosion occurred at around 04.00 WIB, Wednesday (23/2) in the morning.
The explosion caused a rain of chemicals in the factory area to PT Pertamina which is next to PT MCCI.
“In the early hours of the morning, there was information from the public that there was an explosion at PT MCCI. The police went there early in the morning because the police were still there and there was still smoke and spray so they could not approach the location,” said Cilegon Police Chief AKBP Sigit Haryono, Wednesday ( 23/2).
Until this news was revealed, the Cilegon Police Criminal Investigation Unit was still waiting to be able to enter the factory area.
According to Sigit, the area around the factory must first be neutralized from the scattered chemicals. Only then can the police investigate further.
“The company’s security management has finallyshutdown first, and maybe this afternoon go to the location,” he said.
Meanwhile, one injured victim is still being treated at the company’s clinic. Police said the victim’s injuries were not too fatal, so he was not rushed to the hospital.
“Meanwhile, one victim is still being observed and injured. He is still being treated at the (company) clinic because his injuries are not too serious,” he said.
Police also admitted that they were still investigating the cause of the explosion which caused chemical ash to rain around the factory site.
