Chemelot site steam production restored, tower flare still visible amid recent smoke formation incident

April 3, 2024 | Special incidents

Update & closing message 3:15 PM: Steam production on the Chemelot site has been restored. As a result, although the tower flare is still visible, the smoke formation has disappeared.

The flaring caused smoke development, which lasted longer than usual. This was the result of a temporary shortage of steam. As soon as steam production returned to normal, steam was immediately added to the flare, which improved the situation.

We expect the flare to be visible for several more hours. Unfortunately, this can be accompanied by light and noise pollution. We do everything we can to keep any possible inconvenience to a minimum.

Do you want to know why flares are used at Chemelot? Then watch the video here who explains what flaring is.
